Maastricht is the culinary capital of The Netherlands. Not only the Burgundian restaurants will surprise you, but also restaurants with other cultural backgrounds. In the city of Maastricht, you will find many Italian, Spanish, Asian and so much more restaurants. If you’re a real foodie like us, but you don’t know where to start, no worries. We have selected our personal favorites for you! So, go outside and start your Maastricht food journey at these restaurants.

PIEKE POTLOED – LIMBURGIAN
This restaurant tells the old story of an old puppeteer from Maastricht, all locals know the story behind the name and many of them come to have lunch or dinner here. Ask for the story when you are there! You can enjoy an authentic dish from Maastricht called ‘zuurvlees’. Originally, this dish is made with horse meat, but at Pieke Potloed they prepare the dish with beef. Basically, it’s a beef stew that comes together with Belgium fries. If you are not into stew, try their delicious pork tenderloin saté with peanut sauce!

CAFÉ MADRID – SPANISH
Eating here is all about sharing good food with good company. This Spanish restaurant serves typical Spanish tapas which you can share. All kinds of famous Spanish tapas can be found here, for instance, albondigas, paella and many different kinds of croquetas. Don’t forget to order a large jug of homemade sangria or tinto de verano to complete the experience.

BOUCHON D’EN FACE – FRENCH
You can find this restaurant on your way from hotel The Dutch to the historic city center. The same rustic appearance from the outside will also meet you in the interior. When you walk through the doors you hear the French chansons playing in the background. The menu has a lot of different authentic French dishes and a wide selection of French wines. If you are in the mood for some escargots, bouillabaisse or steak tartare stop by Bouchon d’en Face in the Wyck district.

PAPAZ – MIDDLE EASTERN
An original combination of the Middle-Eastern cuisine and the Mediterranean cuisine is presented at Papaz near the train station. The chef the cuisine has worked in multiple high-end French restaurants and his wife (the hostess) is from Iran. By combining their strengths, they serve a fusion of the best Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dishes. All of their spices are directly imported from Iran which completes the experience.

THAIICHI – ASIAN
This cozy Asian restaurant combines a modern Japanese sushi bar with an authentic Thai restaurant. There is a great atmosphere and a well-balanced mix of authenticity and modernity. The price/quality is great and the menu offers something for everybody.

TAVERNA LA VACA – EUROPEAN
Here you can enjoy dishes from all over the European coastal area. Small platters with food from Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Turkey will be found at this restaurant. Locals love to get together here and share platters or have a drink at the cozy terrace nearby the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. 

TOSCANELLA APUANA – ITALIAN

When you set foot in Toscanella you will find yourself wandering in Italy. This place really has the authentic Italian setting which gets completed by the Italian staff that works there. They have a whole cabinet with different varieties of cheese and meat which you can choose for your focaccia or pizza. Don’t forget to order a delicious Italian espresso at the counter!
